Yummy Camping Food On A Campsite
Did you know that it is actually possible to go camping and still eat properly?
There are two basic types of camping. The first type of camping is doing the real outdoors bit. With this sort of a holiday you are unlikely to be close to many shops – so getting supplies right is pretty important. The second type of camping is on a campsite where there is access to plenty of shops and restaurants – this is the one we are going to focus on today.
If you are on a camp site then there is a tendency to live of the local takeaway and to eat on a table outside your tent. This is great for the first couple of nights – but after a while it starts to get a little boring. So what are your other choices. Well, I am a great believer in the disposal BBQ. In fact I think that one should take at least two of these for each week camping. The key to making this work is to cook way more food than you intend to eat. The reason for this is simple – sandwiches the next day for either breakfast or lunch! But what do you have with your BBQ? Local produce is always the way forward. In Europe, a lot of the campsites are owned by farmers, and they normally have a shop. This is the perfect place to pick up a few essentials for a salad. They will also probably sell local made sausages, pates and cold meats. A campers best friend should always be the local farmer.
However, having a fresh salad can still be a bit boring – so how do you spice things up a bit?
Firstly, every salad needs a good dressing. It is essential to make several different types of dressing before you leave home. Make sure that you use ingredients which you do not need to keep chilled. Here is the recipe which I use:
3 table spoons of olive oil
1 table spoon of vinegar
1 clove of garlic
2 teaspoons of honey
1 teaspoon of grainy mustard
I make a fairly big batch of this and put it in a couple of old jam jars and take it with me.
I also take easy to cook 5 minute noodles and a bottle of soy sauce. These are great for camping because you can boil the water on a camping stove, and at the same time add some broccoli, and baby carrots from the local farm shop. When everything is cooked, strain and mix in some of the cut up cold sausages from the BBQ the other night, add soy sauce and you have a perfect stir fry.
So with a little preparation you can easily prepare foods which are tasty, healthy and support the local farm and industry – perfect!
